River Trips

  • We offer river trips up and down the East River and beyond

  • Participants must be at least 18 years of age

  • Our easiest trips are appropriate for beginners. We kayak on 2 person boats and we may pair you with a more experienced paddler

  • We also row in 2 large whitehall gig rowboats.

  • For some of the longer trips (Brooklyn Bridge Park, Governor’s Island, Manhattan Circumnavigation, etc.), you will need to be comfortable on rougher water and have the stamina for longer paddling and rowing times

Expect to get wet in our kayaks. Seating in our large whitehall gig rowboats offers a drier ride. Please dress suitably and be mindful of what you bring on the kayak! We have a few dry bags to share.

  • We accept donations.

    • Plenty of drinking water

    • Snacks/lunch

    • Sunblock!

    • Quick drying clothing is recommended; avoid cotton. You can also bring a change of clothes

    • Wear water shoes/sandals or old shoes that you won't mind getting wet

    • A hat and sunglasses are recommended

  • You can change behind a screen or in the bathroom at the boathouse.

  • We do not rent kayaks.

  • We generally limit party registration size to 2 people for a single boat. Larger groups must register as independent two-person parties, with independent contact information. Please send a message to licboathouse.dd2023@gmail.com if you want to request a group paddle river trip.


  • The water is generally fine for kayaking. If it has rained a lot the day before, and we are not comfortable with the safety of the water, we will cancel the event.

  • We do everything we can to assure a safe experience, providing flotation devices and providing plenty of volunteers to keep an eye on things. But your safety is ultimately up to you. Kayaking requires that you pay attention to your surroundings, to our volunteers' guidelines, underwater obstacles, and generally take care of yourself.
